A Website Critic for Codex
Let Codex roast the site it is building, before it goes live. Findings come with locations, Codex fixes them in your repository, and every re-roast shows what moved.
How It Works
Add the MCP server and sign in
Two commands. Codex opens your browser once to sign in to Roast by AI — no API key to copy.
Install the roast-loop skill
Optional, but it is what turns single roasts into a loop: tunnel a local port, check your credits, fix the highest-severity findings, re-roast and stop at your target score.
Ask Codex to roast your site
Name a URL or a local port. Codex roasts it, works through the findings, and reports each version's score with the deltas.
Setup
Add the server and sign in:
$ codex mcp add roastbyai --url https://mcp.roastbyai.com/mcp
$ codex mcp login roastbyai
Or add it to ~/.codex/config.toml by hand, then run the login command:
[mcp_servers.roastbyai]
url = "https://mcp.roastbyai.com/mcp"
Add the roast-loop skill
Codex reads personal skills from ~/.agents/skills. Copy the skill there, or into a repository's .agents/skills/ for one project:
git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/roastbyai/claude-plugin.git /tmp/roastbyai-plugin
mkdir -p ~/.agents/skills
cp -R /tmp/roastbyai-plugin/skills/roast-loop ~/.agents/skills/
Then ask Codex to roast the site on port 3000, or call the skill directly with $roast-loop 3000 target 80. For a local port the skill opens a Cloudflare quick tunnel (brew install cloudflared), because our crawler cannot reach localhost.
What You Get
Full website analysis from the Codex CLI, the desktop app and the IDE extension.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can Codex roast a site that only runs on localhost?
- Yes, through a tunnel. Our crawler runs on our servers, so the roast-loop skill exposes your local port with a Cloudflare quick tunnel, roasts the temporary address and closes the tunnel when the loop ends. While it runs, anyone with the random address can reach your dev server, so don't tunnel a dev server that shows debug pages with secrets.
- Is the skill required?
- No. With only the MCP server you can ask Codex to roast any public URL and get scores, issues and recommendations. The skill adds the loop: fixes in your code, re-roasts with score deltas, and a report.
- Do I need a paid plan?
- No. Any account works, including free accounts. Every roast costs one credit, and new accounts start with credits to try the loop. View pricing.
- Does it work in the Codex app and IDE extension?
- Codex's desktop app, CLI and IDE extension share the same
config.toml, so the server you add once is available in all three. The app and the extension offer an Authenticate button for the sign-in.
